How to Choose a Wedding Photographer in Houston: 7 Questions to Ask

· 3 min read

Your wedding photos are the only thing that lasts after the flowers fade and the cake is gone. Choosing the right photographer is not just about price, it’s about finding someone whose style, personality, and experience match what you want to remember.

Here are 7 questions every Houston couple should ask before booking.

Portfolio highlights are easy to cherry-pick. A full gallery shows you how a photographer handles an entire day: the getting-ready chaos, the emotional ceremony, the dark reception. Ask to see 2–3 complete galleries from recent weddings.

Red flag: A photographer who only shows you 20 “best of” images.

2. Have you shot at my venue before?

Familiarity with a venue is a real advantage. Photographers who know The Astorian or Chateau Cocomar already know where the best light falls, where to position for the first dance, and where to take the couple for golden hour portraits.

3. What’s your backup plan if you get sick?

This happens. A professional photographer has a network of trusted colleagues and a clear plan for emergencies. Never book someone who doesn’t have an answer to this question.

4. What does the contract cover?

At minimum, your contract should specify: the date, hours of coverage, number of photographers, delivery timeline, image rights, and what happens if the photographer cancels.

5. How do you handle low-light receptions?

Houston receptions are often held in dimly lit ballrooms or outdoor spaces at night. Ask to see examples from similar environments. A photographer with professional lighting equipment and experience in challenging conditions is essential.

6. How long until we receive our photos?

Industry standard is 6–10 weeks for a full wedding gallery. Some photographers take 3–4 months. Make sure expectations are clear in writing before you sign.

7. What is your photography style?

The three main styles are:

  • Traditional/Classic: posed, formal portraits
  • Photojournalistic/Documentary: candid, story-driven
  • Editorial/Fine Art: stylized, magazine-quality

Most photographers blend styles, but you want someone whose natural tendency matches your vision. If you love the look of candid emotional moments, don’t hire someone whose portfolio is 80% posed formals.

The Most Important Factor: Do You Connect?

Beyond skills and portfolio, you’ll spend 8–10 hours with this person on one of the most important days of your life. Book a call or meeting before signing anything. You should feel comfortable, not nervous.
